There are many companies out there that are scams. They come in and load up your belongings, but then never bring them back. This is why it is so important to do your research and be sure that the company has the proper license and documentation so that you know they are a legitimate business. You should also call the local better business bureau to be sure that they are registered, and even ask for a list of references you can call to determine the validity of their operation.

2. Ask About Insurance Coverage Of The Workers and The Belongings

Another important thing to do is to ask about insurance coverage. First you need to be sure that the workers have insurance coverage and that you won't be held liable for any injury or problems during the move. For example, if a worker slips and falls while on your property moving furniture, will it be you or the company that will be held responsible? If the company doesn't have workers comp over their employees then you could be at risk for a lawsuit.

Second, you need to ask about insurance over personal belongings. Some moving companies offer insurance over the belongings that they move for you. This will protect them in the case that they are damaged or stolen. However, if the company doesn't offer insurance you may need to purchase additional insurance through your homeowners or renters insurance policy.

3. Get In Writing The Final Price Before You Hire

Some companies will estimate the cost based on volume, weight, or how much space your things will take up in the truck. There are usually extra charges involved with moving long distances, carrying heavy items and so forth. This is why before you hire any company you are clear about what the final bill will be.
