4 Self Storage Mistakes To Avoid

If you are planning to store many of your belongings in a storage unit to declutter your home, you are going to want to store your items in the safest way possible. When you store your belongings in the right way, you are going to better protect your belongings and ensure that you are able to find things easily. In order to do this, you will want to avoid these four common mistakes people make with their self storage:

  1. Not Insuring Your Items: Everything that you store in your self-storage unit should have insurance. If your items are not insured and something happens, such as a fire or flood, you will lose the value of all those items. The self-storage facility won't be responsible for these types of damages. What you are going to have to do instead is insure your belongings either through your homeowners or renters insurance policy or with the insurance options provided by the storage facility. Call your renters or homeowners insurance company to determine whether or not they will be able to provide adequate coverage for your belongings for a more affordable price than what the storage facility can provide.
  2. Using Newspaper for Wrapping: Protecting fragile items is important, which is why you should use wrapping paper that is designed to protect items, not newspaper. The problem with newspaper is that the ink leaks, which is going to possibly cause permanent damage to your belongings.
  3. Not Labeling: In order to find your belongings quickly, you are going to want to label your items. You should also stack boxes that contain similar items together so you know what section you need to go to in order to find certain things. Not doing this can waste a great deal of time and even cause damage when you have to rummage through things to find what you're looking for.
  4. Not Using Pallet Boards: Avoid stacking things directly on the floor. Instead, place your items on pallets. This is going to more readily protect your belongings in the case of a flood. You never know when a plumbing pipe can burst in the facility or when the area can become so heavily flooded that it begins to leak into your storage space.

By avoiding these four common mistakes, you can be sure that you store things correctly and prevent damage that could end up costing you valuable time and money.
